One US teaspoon is 4.93 mL. Medicine labels and metric countries use exactly 5 mL.
How many mL is a teaspoon?
mL = tsp × 4.92892
The US teaspoon is ⅓ of a tablespoon, which is ½ of a fluid ounce, so it comes to 4.92892 mL. The metric teaspoon used in the UK, Canada, Australia and on pharmacy labels is a round 5 mL. The 1.4% gap is irrelevant in cooking.

- 1 tsp = 4.9 mL (5 mL)
- 2 tsp = 9.9 mL
- 3 tsp = 14.8 mL (1 tbsp)
Why "5 mL" and not "1 teaspoon" for medicine?
Because kitchen teaspoons vary far more than people expect — a study published in the Annals of Pharmacotherapy measured household teaspoons from about 2.5 to 7.3 mL. Doubling a child's dose by accident is easy. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that liquid medicines be labelled and dosed in millilitres only, using an oral syringe or the cup supplied.
Teaspoons in vanilla, yeast and baking powder
The ingredients measured in teaspoons are usually the potent ones: leaveners, salt, extracts, spices. A packet of dry yeast holds 2¼ teaspoons (about 11 mL, 7 g). For these, a level measuring spoon is worth using even in casual cooking.
The reverse is on mL to tsp.
Who defines the teaspoon in millilitres?
NIST Special Publication 811, the US guide to the SI gives the US teaspoon as 4.928922 × 10−6 m³ (4.93 mL). The FDA's 21 CFR 101.9 sets 1 teaspoon = 5 mL for nutrition labelling, and the American Academy of Pediatrics' 2015 policy statement on liquid medications recommends millilitre-only dosing rather than teaspoons.
Formula
