Reading a European or Australian recipe
Recipes written in metric countries often give small amounts in mL — "5 mL vanilla, 2.5 mL salt". Those are deliberately spoon-sized: 5 mL is a teaspoon, 2.5 mL half of one, 15 mL a tablespoon (20 mL in Australia). You do not need a syringe; you need to recognise the spoon.
How many drops are in a millilitre?
Pharmacy practice uses about 20 drops per mL, but real droppers vary with the liquid and the tip — essential oils can give 25–40. A recipe or dose given in drops is approximate by nature; one given in mL is not.
The reverse is on tsp to mL.
Why does this page divide by 4.93, not 5?
Because NIST Special Publication 811, the US guide to the SI lists the US customary teaspoon as 4.928922 mL. The round 5 mL is the metric and labelling teaspoon — the FDA's 21 CFR 101.9 uses it — and the difference is 1.4%.
Formula
Teaspoons = Milliliters × 0.202884136
