How many ounces in a cup?
fl oz = cups × 8
One US cup holds 8 fluid ounces. Fractions convert cleanly: ¼ cup = 2 fl oz, ⅓ cup = 2⅔ fl oz, ½ cup = 4 fl oz, ¾ cup = 6 fl oz.
A "cup" of coffee is not a measuring cup
Coffee makers count "cups" of 5 or 6 fluid ounces, not 8. A 12-cup coffee maker brews about 60 fl oz — roughly 7½ measuring cups. Drinks are similar: a standard American mug holds 10 to 12 fl oz, and a "tall" coffee in many chains is 12 fl oz, a cup and a half.
Other countries' cups hold more
Australia, New Zealand, Canada and South Africa use a metric cup of 250 mL, which is 8.45 US fl oz. Japan uses a 200 mL cup. A recipe from those countries converted with "1 cup = 8 oz" comes out 5% to 15% off — enough to change a cake.

Where does the factor of 8 come from?
From the US gallon of 231 cubic inches, divided into 16 cups and 128 fluid ounces. NIST Special Publication 811, the US guide to the SI gives the resulting cup as 236.5882 mL and the fluid ounce as 29.57353 mL. The FDA's labelling rule, 21 CFR 101.9, rounds them to 240 mL and 30 mL.
