Area converts by the square of the length factor. One meter is 100 centimeters, but one square meter is 10,000 square centimeters.
How is an area conversion calculated?
Square the length relationship. A foot is 0.3048 m, so a square foot is 0.3048 × 0.3048 = 0.09290304 m². An apartment listed at 1,500 square feet is 1,500 × 0.09290304 = 139.35 m². The same squaring explains why area numbers grow so fast: a square kilometer is a million square meters, not a thousand.
What is the most common area mistake?
Using the length factor instead of the area factor. Dividing square centimeters by 100 to get square meters is off by a factor of a hundred; the correct divisor is 10,000. It happens most when someone converts each side of a room to meters but then converts the area as if it were a length. Converting the sides first and multiplying afterward always works.
How big is a hectare, and how big is an acre?
A hectare is a square 100 m on each side: 10,000 m². It is not an SI unit, but the BIPM’s SI Brochure lists it among the units accepted for use with the SI, and it is the standard measure for farmland in most of the world. A soccer pitch at the 105 × 68 m size FIFA recommends covers 7,140 m², about 0.71 hectares.
An acre is 43,560 square feet, or 4,046.86 m². The number is awkward because the acre is older than the foot-based arithmetic: it was a strip one furlong (660 ft) long and one chain (66 ft) wide, traditionally the land a team of oxen could plow in a day. One hectare is 2.471 acres.
