Divide millilitres by 236.6. A 250 mL carton is 1.06 US cups.
How many cups is 1 mL?
cups = mL ÷ 236.5882
- 60 mL = ¼ cup
- 80 mL = ⅓ cup
- 120 mL = ½ cup
- 180 mL = ¾ cup
- 250 mL = 1.06 cups
- 500 mL = 2.11 cups
- 1,000 mL = 4.23 cups
The left-hand figures are rounded to what a measuring cup can show; the exact quarter cup is 59.1 mL.
Which cup does the recipe mean?
Divide by 236.6 for an American recipe, by 250 for one from Australia, New Zealand, Canada or South Africa, and by 200 for a Japanese one. Using the wrong cup changes a liquid by 5% to 15% — harmless in a stew, noticeable in a custard or a cake.
Milk, cream and stock in cups
Liquid ingredients in metric packaging rarely line up with US cups: a 200 mL cream carton is 0.85 cup, a 1 L carton of milk 4¼ cups. When a US recipe calls for "1 cup milk", 240 mL is the practical measure on a metric jug.
The reverse is on cups to mL.
Which cup does this page use?
The US customary cup, listed in NIST Special Publication 811, the US guide to the SI as 236.5882 mL. The FDA's 21 CFR 101.9 rounds it to 240 mL on nutrition labels; the metric cup used in Australia, New Zealand and Canada is 250 mL.
