How do you convert feet and inches to centimeters?
Turn the whole height into inches first, then multiply by 2.54. For 5′10″: 5 × 12 = 60, plus 10 is 70 inches, and 70 × 2.54 = 177.8 cm. Converting feet and inches separately and adding gives the same answer with one more step — 5 × 30.48 = 152.4, plus 10 × 2.54 = 25.4, total 177.8 cm.
How do you convert cm to feet and inches?
Divide by 2.54 to get inches, then take out the twelves. For 180 cm: 180 ÷ 2.54 = 70.87 inches. Twelve goes into 70 five times (60), leaving 10.87 — so 5 ft 10.9 in, which people say as 5′11″. The single-number cm to feet converter gives decimal feet (5.906 ft), which is correct but not how anyone states a height.
Why is 5.10 feet not 5 foot 10?
Because a foot has twelve inches, not ten. 5.10 feet is five feet and a tenth of a foot — 1.2 inches — so 155.4 cm. Five foot ten is 177.8 cm. Which height format do official forms want?
US documents — driver's licences, the DS-160 visa application, most medical forms — ask for feet and inches. Passports and ID cards in most of the world use centimetres or metres (1.78 m). If a form gives one box labelled "height (cm)", enter whole centimetres; if it gives two, feet and inches, round the inches to the nearest whole number.
Where does the 2.54 come from?
From the international inch. In 1959 the national standards laboratories of the US, the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa agreed on a yard of exactly 0.9144 m, which made the foot 30.48 cm and the inch 2.54 cm with no rounding; in the US the National Bureau of Standards (now NIST) announced it effective 1 July 1959.
