How many feet is a centimeter?
ft = cm ÷ 30.48
The answer from the calculator is decimal feet. For a height, that is only half the job.
How do you convert a height in cm to feet and inches?
People state height as feet plus inches, and 5.9 feet is not "five foot nine". It is five feet and 0.9 of a foot — 10.8 inches. To get the familiar form:
- Divide the centimetres by 2.54 to get total inches: 180 ÷ 2.54 = 70.9 in.
- Divide by 12: 70.9 ÷ 12 = 5, remainder 10.9.
- The height is 5 ft 10.9 in, usually rounded to 5′11″.

Where does 30.48 come from?
From the inch. The US National Bureau of Standards (now NIST), in an announcement effective 1 July 1959 fixed the inch at 2.54 cm, and twelve of them make 30.48 cm, the figure NIST Special Publication 811, the US guide to the SI lists as exact. The older US survey foot, a hair longer, was retired by NIST and the National Geodetic Survey at the end of 2022.
