Divide millimetres by 1,000. A 2,400 mm beam is 2.4 m.
How many meters is a millimeter?
m = mm ÷ 1,000
Three decimal places to the left. The step is large enough that it is easy to move two places by habit — centimetre reflex — and get a result ten times too big.
Why do engineers draw everything in millimeters?
Mechanical and architectural drawings in most of the world are dimensioned in millimetres, often without writing the unit at all. A wall on a floor plan marked "4200" is 4.2 m. The convention avoids decimal points entirely — a smudged or missed point on a construction drawing is an expensive mistake — and it is precise enough for almost every building task without being so fine that the numbers become unwieldy.
If you receive a drawing with bare numbers and no unit, millimetres is the safe assumption in metric countries. Converting to metres is only needed when ordering material sold by the metre.
What does a millimeter of rain mean?
Weather reports give rain in millimetres, which sounds like a length. It is, but it also gives a volume directly: 1 mm of rain over 1 m² is exactly 1 litre of water. A 25 mm downpour on a 100 m² roof sends 2,500 litres into the gutters. That is the calculation behind sizing rainwater tanks and drainage, and it only works because the metric units nest so neatly: 0.001 m × 1 m² = 0.001 m³ = 1 L.
Who defines the millimeter?
The SI Brochure published by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) defines the prefix milli as 10−3, so a millimetre is exactly a thousandth of a metre. ISO 129-1, the international standard for dimensioning technical drawings, lets a drawing state one predominant unit — in mechanical engineering almost always the millimetre — which is why so many measurements arrive in millimetres and need converting to metres.
Formula
Meters = Millimeters × 0.001
10 mm = 0.01 m
