Multiply metres by 1,000. A 1.25 m shelf is 1,250 mm.

How many millimeters is a meter?

mm = m × 1,000

This is the direction for the workshop: the design says metres, the saw and the drawing say millimetres.

Why are tolerances written in millimeters?

A tolerance of "±0.002 m" is correct and nearly unreadable. The same figure written as ±2 mm is immediately understood by anyone holding a ruler. That is why specifications, cutting lists and manufacturing orders convert everything to millimetres before a single cut is made — the unit matches the scale of the error you are trying to avoid.

A useful sense of proportion: 1 mm over a 1 m length is 0.1%. Most cabinetry works to about that; machined metal parts work to hundredths of a millimetre.

Where do millimeters appear in everyday specs?

  • Tyres — in "205/55 R16", the 205 is the tread width in millimetres; the 16 is the rim diameter in inches. One label, two systems.
  • Paper — A4 is 210 × 297 mm; the ISO A-series is defined in millimetres.
  • Camera lenses — focal lengths like 50 mm are genuine millimetres.

For the imperial equivalent in the workshop, see mm to inches.

Why does a meter hold exactly 1,000 millimeters?

Because the prefix milli means a thousandth, as defined in the SI Brochure published by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM). ISO 286, the international standard for fits and tolerances, expresses its tables in millimetres and micrometres, and ISO 129-1 lets drawings state the millimetre once as their predominant unit.

Formula

Millimeters = Meters × 1000

10 m = 10,000 mm
