Divide teaspoons by 3. Six teaspoons is 2 tablespoons.
How many tablespoons is a teaspoon?
tbsp = tsp ÷ 3
One teaspoon is ⅓ tablespoon. The conversion matters most when a spoon is missing: a recipe asks for 1 tablespoon and you only have a teaspoon, so you use three level ones.
- 1 tsp = ⅓ tbsp
- 1½ tsp = ½ tbsp
- 2 tsp = ⅔ tbsp
- 3 tsp = 1 tbsp
- 4 tsp = 1⅓ tbsp
- 12 tsp = 4 tbsp = ¼ cup
What are a pinch and a dash?
Some measuring-spoon sets define them: a dash is ⅛ teaspoon and a pinch is 1/16 teaspoon. They are not standardised by any authority, and in practice a pinch is what fits between thumb and finger. For salt in baking, where a little matters, use the ⅛ or ¼ teaspoon instead.
Level, not heaped
Every spoon measure in a recipe means level unless it says otherwise. A heaped teaspoon of flour can hold close to double a level one. Scoop, then sweep across the top with the back of a knife.
The other direction is on tbsp to tsp.
Where does the ⅓ come from?
From the US definitions in NIST Special Publication 811, the US guide to the SI: teaspoon 4.928922 mL, tablespoon 14.78676 mL. The FDA's 21 CFR 101.9 rounds them to 5 and 15 mL for labelling, keeping the same 1-to-3 ratio.
