Divide litres by 1,000. A 5,000 L rainwater tank holds 5 kL.
How many kiloliters is a liter?
kL = L ÷ 1,000
One kilolitre is exactly one cubic metre — a cube one metre on each side. That equivalence is the most useful thing to know about the unit, because it lets you estimate volumes of tanks and pools from their dimensions.
How do you read a water bill in kiloliters?
Utilities in Australia, South Africa and elsewhere bill water per kilolitre; many others bill per cubic metre, which is the same thing under another name. Household use is easier to judge in litres: a shower uses roughly 8–10 litres a minute, so a 10 minute shower is about 0.1 kL. A household using 15 kL a month is using around 500 litres a day.
How many kiloliters does a pool or tank hold?
Multiply length × width × average depth in metres and you have kilolitres directly. A backyard pool of 8 × 4 m with an average depth of 1.4 m holds 44.8 kL — almost 45,000 litres. An Olympic pool, 50 × 25 m at a minimum depth of 2 m, holds at least 2,500 kL.
US pool equipment is sized in gallons; for that side see liters to gallons.
Why is a kiloliter the same as a cubic meter?
Because the litre is exactly one cubic decimetre, a definition set by the 12th General Conference on Weights and Measures in 1964 and kept in the SI Brochure published by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM). A thousand cubic decimetres fill one cubic metre, and kilo is the SI prefix for a thousand.
