There are two gallons, and they are not close. The US liquid gallon is 3.785 L; the imperial gallon still used in the UK and parts of the Caribbean is 4.54609 L — 20% larger. A car advertised at 40 miles per gallon does substantially better on paper in Britain than in America for no mechanical reason at all. If a figure comes from a British source, check which gallon before converting.
