One metre is 1.09361 yards. A 100 m sprint is 109.36 yards.
How many yards is a meter?
yd = m ÷ 0.9144, or m × 1.0936133.
Athletics shows the switch clearly. The classic imperial sprint was 100 yards; the modern standard is 100 m, which is 9.36 yards longer. When athletics went metric in the 1970s, the old yard records became historical curiosities.
How did the yard get its current value?
The yard was defined by physical prototype bars for centuries, then in 1959 redefined as exactly 0.9144 m by the same agreement that fixed the inch and the pound. The metric system won the definition; the imperial names survived the outcome.
Why do golf distances use yards?
Course distances are marked in yards in the US and UK and in metres across most of continental Europe, so a 150-yard marker is 137 m. Players who use a rangefinder set to the wrong unit club themselves wrong by roughly one club length.
Anchor: 100 m is about 109 yards, and a metre is a yard plus a hand's width.
Is the yard-to-meter factor exact?
The yard is; its inverse is not. NIST Special Publication 811, the US guide to the SI gives the yard as exactly 0.9144 m, the value agreed in 1959 and written into British law by the Weights and Measures Act 1963, so a metre works out at 1.0936133… yards. The metre itself is defined in the SI Brochure published by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) through the speed of light.
Formula
Yards = Meters × 1.093613
10 m = 10.936133 yd
